Nona Mitchell, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on August 17, 1942, in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the eldest daughter of the late Bessie (née Thomas) and LeRoy Dixon.
Nona graduated from Central High School and went on to build a successful career at General Motors. A hardworking and determined woman, she exemplified perseverance and strength throughout her years of service. Upon retirement, her greatest joy became spending time with her family. She cherished every moment with them, offering love, wisdom, and laughter.
Nona was a true history buff, finding joy in learning and sharing stories from the past. She had a fiery, independent spirit and a sharp wit that made every conversation memorable. She had a lifelong passion for sports, especially basketball, and was a devoted Cleveland Cavaliers fan—though her heart truly belonged to LeBron James. She was also known to track her own game stats and jump into any and every sports debate.
She found happiness in life’s simple pleasures: a good crossword puzzle, delicious food, a cold Pepsi, and the love of those closest to her. Above all, Nona loved her family deeply and unconditionally. She leaves behind her daughters, Roni (Allen) and Stacey, and joins her beloved daughter, Kim, in eternal rest.
Nona is also survived by her grandchildren— Desiree “Desi”, Deja “Twin”, and Desmond “Icky” —and her great-granddaughter-to-be, Oshun. She leaves behind her sister, Linda (Herb); nephew, Sean (Kandice); niece, Stephanie (Matt), and cherished member of the family, Larry (Shirley), along with many extended family members and dear friends who will miss her strength, humor, and love.
Though she has left this world, Nona’s legacy lives on in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know her. Today, as we say goodbye, we hold onto the warmth of her memory, knowing she will forever live on in the stories, laughter, and love she shared with us all.
