Nora Lee Calmese Barner was born in Memphis, Tennessee on June 14, 1942, to the union of Edgar and Anna (Jones) Calmese. Nora was the youngest out of 13 children. She was known as Peaches. She departed this life peacefully in her sleep surrounded by loved ones on April 8, 2018, at the age of 75. Nora grew up in Kent, Ohio and after graduating from Kent Roosevelt High School, she married and moved to Akron, Ohio where she attended Washington Beauty School. She was a loving mother to her daughters, Carla and Tamarlin who were always with her. There was not a day that went by that Nora and her daughters talked to each other. They were closer than close. Nora enjoyed traveling with her daughters and their families, attending family reunions, and visiting with all her grandchildren. Nora’s professional talents included an extensive cosmetology career in the Akron area and in Nashville, Tennessee. She also worked as an Account Executive for Clairol and Lustersilk, Inc. and a Cosmetology Instructor for Gerber’s Beauty School. After semi-retiring from the Cosmetology field, she enrolled in the University of Akron to seek a degree in Social Work. She was extremely dedicated to her school work and received excellent grades. While at the University, she worked with various professors on projects and even enrolled in Americorps to give back to the community. She earned her certification in Alcohol Assessment and Treatment and became a Long-Term Care Ombudsman. Nora volunteered Mature Services and worked temporarily as a Case Manager at Urban Ounce of Prevention. She never stayed still. A woman of many talents! She helped raise all her grandchildren alongside her daughters and their families and also was always there helping with her nieces and nephews when they were growing up. She was an excellent caregiver to her brothers and her sister Ruby until her passing. She took grandchildren to doctors appointments and to activities and attended every function she could to demonstrate her love for her children and grandchildren.
