Orlando Carlos Winston was born November 1, 1957 to the union of the late Roe and Charles Winston in Cleveland, Ohio. He was affectionately known as “Big Artie”, “Big O”, or just Orlando by his many family and friends. His beloved grandchildren called him “Big Daddy”. He attended the Cleveland Public Schools and graduated from John Hay High School in 1976. During junior high school, he was extremely proud of being the black history school champ. While at John Hay displayed exceptional math aptitude to calculate complex math problems in his head. Because of his keen eye, a few times had to correct his math teacher calculations. His math abilities often resulted in payoffs through his gambling activities. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country well and was honorably discharged. Orlando showed a strong interest in exterminating from the age of 13 from his mother’s brother Uncle Payton. After Uncle Payton took him under his wings his exterminating career began at the age of 19. He successfully completed the Electronic Engineering program at the Electronic Technology Institute in 1983. He furthered his education in entomology at Purdue University to certify as a Pest Control Technician. Because of his extensive knowledge in etymology during his time in training at Ecolab while in training he started training his own training class including the person who was training him. Orlando had an entrepreneurial spirit in which he utilized his education, natural math abilities, to pursue his long-term goals. He worked for numerous exterminating companies whose operating theory was control and not elimination. Based on his reading and research, pests could be eliminated which was evident by one of the companies he desired to work for. As a result, started the Satisfaction Exterminating Company and guaranteed his services for a number of years. Being self-employed he acquired numerous business and residential accounts. Based on his guaranteed protection policy, his services remain in demand today.
During his high school years, he met Bishop Squire Tyus, & Minister Thurman Tyus known by John Hay students as “Chief” & ‘Weed hopper”. The relationship with the Chief and Weedhopper leads him to question the life he was living. He couldn’t decide whether to read The Quoran or The Holy Bible. His research led him to the oldest and most read book in the world The Holy Bible. Orlando read extensively and gained an in-depth knowledge of the word under the direction of Bishop Tyus which began his spiritual journey. He continued his biblical research with his best friend James Martin II of over 45 years. People often challenged him on his biblical knowledge, but often defeated because he could reference the word with profound accuracy and understanding.
Orlando united in holy matrimony to Debra Tyus July 30, 1981. Together they continued their spiritual walk with the Lord. Orlando was a God fearing, loving husband and best friend to Debra. A wonderful special father to Orlando (Little Artie), Glenn (Baba) and Yolanda. Orlando loved being “Big Daddy” to all of his grandchildren. As his health declined his grandchildren brought him joy and happiness. His legacy to his children and grandchildren was biblical knowledge an entrepreneurial spirit making your dreams and aspirations a reality.
Orlando was successful in the three things he wanted to achieve in his lifetime. He ran his own business where he received certificates for Integrated Pest Management, Commendation of Performance from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, Pest Elimination recognition from “Bugs” Burger Bug Killers, Inc., work for Bugs Burger Bug Killer Inc, (worked for #1 pest elimination company) and lastly became a truck driver.
Orlando was very stylish. His tall stature with big hats and southwestern jewelry demanded attention as he entered a room. His charismatic personality, vibrant smile, infectious laughter and sense of humor
was contagious. Everyone who met him knew you would laugh or have a long conversation. His longest conversations were to challenge your biblical intellect. Orlando always had a thirst for knowledge and was an avid reader. His ultimate legacy to family and friends was to know and understand the Lord Jesus through the words of The Holy Bible.
He enjoyed history, watching basketball and boxing. He was fiercely competitive in ping pong, poker, shooting pool, blackjack and a few board games like chess, twixt, and scrabble was his favorite. He loved to win!
