Oscar Gainer was born on February 17, 1937, to Rushia Bell Sheffield and Jim Gainer in Americas, Georgia.
Oscar enlisted in the United States Army in 1955, and was honorably discharged in 1959 as a private. After his short term in the Army, he started his career as a landscape for RB Stout in 1961. It was then, he discovered his love for the outdoors, and was an avid Cleveland Browns fan.
