Patricia “Patsy” Merritt
July 31, 1942 – April 19, 2026
Patricia Merritt, affectionately known to all as “Patsy,” was called home to her Lord and Savior on April 19, 2026. A true daughter of Cleveland, Ohio, Patsy was a woman of immense style, deep faith, and an even deeper love for her family.
A Foundations of Love
Born on July 31, 1942, Patsy was the only child of Pauline and Hubert Bryant. As a “happy and spoiled” only child, she was the center of her parents’ world, but she was never lonely. She grew up surrounded by a pack of cousins who were more like siblings. Specifically, she was raised alongside Mildred and Judy; though they were her niece and cousin, the three were raised as sisters, a bond that remained unbreakable throughout her life.
In 1966, Patsy married Erbia Merritt. From this union, she was blessed with her greatest pride and joy, her son, Ladon.
The Matriarch and The “Glue”
Patsy was the heartbeat of the Bryant and Benton families. As a dedicated member of the Family Reunion Committee, she took her role as the family “glue” seriously. Whether she was organizing family trips, hosting BBQs, or simply ensuring everyone stayed connected, Patsy was the one who kept the spirit of the family alive.
Her social life was legendary. She was a founding member of a cherished Birthday Club, a group of women who met monthly to celebrate life and friendship. Among these were her lifelong friends, Effie and Gwen, with whom she shared a bond spanning from early childhood into their golden years.
A Life of Style and Service
Patsy was a graduate of East Tech High School (Class of 1960) and later attended cosmetology school. Though she spent 33 rewarding years as a CNA at University Hospitals (1971-2004), she never lost her touch for beauty. She was known for her impeccable sense of style and her love for shopping—a hobby she pursued with professional-level dedication. When she wasn’t at the shops or traveling the world with her cousin Pat, she was often hand-crafting beautiful jewelry to gift to those she loved.
Her faith was her compass. A lifelong believer, she accepted Christ at Parkwood Church as a child and lived out her testimony through her service to others, always ready with a warm meal or a listening ear for anyone in need.
Legacy
Patsy was a master storyteller, a fearless traveler, and a woman who truly lived life on her own terms. She leaves behind a legacy of laughter, elegance, and the reminder that family is not just who you are born to, but who you choose to hold close.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Pauline and Hubert Bryant. Ladon Merritt; her “sisters” Mildred and Judy.
Her memory will be cherished and kept alive by her devoted son; her dear cousins Cheryl and Darlene; and a vast host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever miss her charisma and the joy she brought to every room she entered.
