Obituary for Mrs. Peggy Ann Mitchell
Mrs. Peggy Ann Mitchell, age 63, passed away peacefully and painlessly on October 15, 2025, at Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield.
Peggy was born on November 10, 1961, in Cleveland, Ohio, at Metropolitan General Hospital, to Roland and Eliza Mitchell. She grew up on Dibble Avenue in the historic Hough Neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio. Peggy attended East High School, graduating in the Class of 1980. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree from Dyke College on June 23, 1985.
Throughout her life, Peggy was dedicated, hardworking, and independent. She built a diverse and successful career beginning in retail at The May Company. She continued in banking for many years with KeyBank and Bank of America, and concluded her career at Progressive Insurance as a Loss Assignor in Claims Resolution. Known for her integrity, diligence, and professionalism, Peggy approached every role with committed care, perseverance and purpose. She was always striving to provide for her family, and desired to do her best at work with excellence.
On December 23, 1998, Peggy married her destined love, Melvin John Mitchell. Together they built a beautiful and loving home, and on February 23, 2000, they welcomed their beloved daughter, Malina. Being a wife and mother was Peggy’s greatest joy. She poured her heart into her family, offering unconditional-love, care, wisdom, encouragement, and endless support.
Peggy’s love extended far beyond her immediate family. She cared deeply for her parents, four brothers, Roland Jr. (Booker) Mitchell, Howard Mitchell (Andrea Mitchell), Charles Mitchell (Patricia Mitchell) and Ronald Mitchell (Donna Mitchell), nephews and nieces, Howard Jr. (Pee-wee) Mitchell, Harlan Mitchell, Rolan Mitchell, Ryan Harris, Timothy Mitchell, Kim Mitchell, Michelle Mitchell, Eric White and Kimberly White, a host of cousins, and many friends who became a part of her family. Her thoughtfulness, compassion, and loving spirit left a lasting imprint on everyone who knew her.
Peggy found great joy in spending time with her family and friends, whether through long, heartfelt conversations or simple moments of connection. She never forgot the people who touched her life and was always ready to offer anything, from support and encouragement, to prayer or a listening ear. Her friends and loved ones often described her as one of the sweetest, and most caring people they had ever known.
Peggy was a woman of deep and abiding faith, Her life was rooted in her relationship with God. Raised in the church, her faith remained the cornerstone of her life’s journey. She was a longtime member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church on East 40th Street in Cleveland during her youth and early adulthood. She later served as a deaconess and member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Bedford, Ohio. Her spirituality guided every step she took and inspired the kindness, compassion, and love she generously shared with everyone she met. Peggy’s faith gave her strength, purpose, blessings, and joy throughout her life, and now she rests in the eternal presence of the Holy Spirit she so deeply loved.
Peggy faced life’s challenges, including her battle with lung cancer towards the end of her life, with remarkable strength and faith. She fought bravely with the help of the Lord, always grateful for the blessings she had and the life she lived. Her compassion for others never faded; her favorite charity was St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, as she wanted every child fighting cancer to have the same chance at life she had been given. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Jude in loving memory of Peggy Mitchell.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Roland and Eliza Mitchell; her brothers, Roland Jr. (Booker) Mitchell and Howard Mitchell; and her beloved husband, Melvin Mitchell.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Malina Mitchell, and her brothers, Charles Mitchell(Patricia Mitchell) and Ronald Mitchell(Donna Mitchell).
Peggy’s legacy lives on in the love she gave, the lives she touched, the faith she lived by, and the values she instilled in her family. Though she will be deeply missed, her love, kindness, compassion, and devotion will continue to inspire all who carry her memory in their hearts. We take comfort knowing that she now rests in God’s eternal embrace, and we look forward to being reunited with her one day in the promised land of the Lord.
