It is with joy, yet also profound sadness, that brings us together this day to honor and celebrate the life legacy of Phyllis R. Hagler-Duncan.
Phyllis Duncan, affectionately known as “Phee Phee” departed this earthly world on March 16, 2024, surrounded by her family, after a prolonged illness. Beloved mother, sister, auntie, daughter, pillar of society and dear friend; Phyllis was born in Cleveland, Ohio on October 31, 1958 to the late Geraldine and Alonzo Hagler Sr.; she was the fourth of seven siblings.
Phyllis was a beacon of kindness and compassion from her earliest days. Her unwavering dedication to her family and her commitment to making a positive impact on those around her defined her remarkable life. Phyllis attended Cleveland Public Schools, attending Rosedale School, Mary M. Bethune School, Muhammed University and John Hay High School, graduating with honors. She sought higher education at Cuyahoga Community College and Cleveland State University, pursuing business studies.
As a mother, Phyllis was a guiding light for her only child, her son Tariq DaMorris Holt. She instilled in him the values of integrity, hard work, and empathy. She took pride in watching him grow into a compassionate and accomplished young man, always offering unconditional love and support. The sun would not set on a day when Tariq did not reach out to check on his mother, she was his rock and he honored her throughout the entirety of his lifetime. Together they shared a bond built on love, respect, and shared dreams. Tariq preceded his mother in death on May 18, 2021.
Phyllis was a motivating inspiration to her family, showing them that together they could achieve great things. Teaching the importance of resilience and perseverance through challenging times, she was a source of strength. Even in her final days, Phyllis held a clear purpose and mission she was determined to fulfill.
Phyllis displayed boundless love and generosity. She always had a kind and giving nature touching the lives of those around her with warmth and compassion. She understood the power of knowledge and the importance of forgiveness. She was careful in the selection of people she surrounded herself with, knowing the significance of choosing people who were loyal; people who could enhance her life and love and increase her positive energy. Phyllis was a gift, one who was fearfully and wonderfully made and she sought that in others.
Phyllis’ entrepreneurial spirit led her to start a company named, “Balloons 4 You”, where she created specialty balloon gift designs. At a young age, she worked as a waitress for the Shabazz Restaurant. For the past 44 years Phyllis worked with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. She began her career as a Junior Clerk, moving up to a Principal Secretary at John W. Raper School, and retiring this past December from Ginn Academy, serving in the position of Chief Secretary. Phyllis was well respected in her professional life. Phyllis was known to “go by the book”; crossing every “t” and dotting every “i”. She demonstrated integrity, diligence, and commitment. Her dedication to her work and colleagues earned her admiration and the respect of all who had the privilege of working alongside her. Sentiments shared by colleagues include; “She was an amazing part of the JWR Team – Feel lucky to have known her”, “the ultimate professional and very kind”, “Duncan went straight by the books… good memories @ JWR”…”, “An amazing woman and I feel blessed to have worked with her!”.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Phyllis’ passions included exploring new places through travel. She loved shopping, online and in person, as she had an eye for fashion. Phyllis was a driver; she preferred driving the freeways versus taking the city streets. When traveling about on her shopping trips, she wanted to go her way, which meant the highway! Phyllis enjoyed working in the yard, nurturing beautiful gardens and being creative in the kitchen, baking sumptuous treats. As a member of our community, Phyllis was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Whether through volunteering her time, offering words of encouragement, or simply sharing a smile, she touched the lives of countless individuals and leaves an indelible mark on our hearts.
