Rebecca Berta Mae Currence Berry, a lady who connected with everyone she met, who was never without a smile, and who exemplified grace in everything she did, entered into eternal rest on Monday, March 3, 2025, at St. Luke Lutheran Community Assisted Living Nursing Home in North Canton, Ohio. While at St. Luke’s she was placed in the care of Crossroads Hospice and Palliative Care, Green, Ohio.
After working in Canton, Ohio, as a secretary and bookkeeper for many years she relocated to Cleveland, Ohio, where she was employed by the Domestic Loan Company and was a Notary Public, and later by The Cleveland Clinic. Rebecca was secretary of the local chapter of the NAACP and president of the Ohio Youth Council. She was also an active member of Temple Baptist Church and Mount Pleasant Church of God, both in Cleveland, and the Arlington Church of God in Akron, Ohio. For thirteen years she volunteered at Highland View Hospital, feeding and visiting the sick.
In 1976, she married Reverend Howard C. Berry and they relocated to Akron, Ohio. In Reverend Berry’s capacity as a visiting minister the couple enjoyed 27 years of traveling throughout the United States and abroad worshipping and serving the Lord. Howard and Rebecca moved to Canton in 1999, shortly after the death of Rebecca’s mother. Shortly after the death of her husband, Rebecca joined Greater New Hope Community Seventh Day Adventist Church in Canton, Ohio, where she took pride in serving as a Deaconess and church clerk, and in any other capacity when needed.
Rebecca was a kind and loving person who worked tirelessly serving God and being a living, breathing example of The First Commandment and an inspiration to everyone she met. She never complained, was strong willed, independent, and searched for the good in everyone.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings; Wilbert Edward, Wiley Augusta, Margaret Melvine, Charles Lindberg, and Kenneth; a sister-in-love, Jeanetta Beatrice Currence.
She is survived by stepdaughters, Amma Assantewaa and Mary Gordon; siblings Juanita Currence Powe, William G. Currence (Jackie), Ronald Currence, Barbara Jean Currence Davis (Lee); niece and caregiver, Brenda Jean Currence, special cousins: Ruth Ramos and Jackie Maddox, godchildren, Terra and David Cargill, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and loving church family.
The family would like to thank the staff at St. Luke Lutheran Assisted Nursing Home and Crossroads Hospice for their kind and compassionate care and support. Rebecca enjoyed living there and loved and appreciated each and everyone on staff. Special thanks to Brandi Lingenhoel, Nurse Practitioner, United Healthcare, for her loving, attentive, and gentle care.
There are not enough words to express our deep gratitude to our Niece, Brenda Currence, for the outstanding and unselfish work she did in caring for her Aunt, our sister, in our absence. She loved Rebecca like a sister and showered her with unimaginable love and compassion.
Special thanks also to our Cousin, Ruth Ramos, for her constant presence and for being a source of strength for Brenda.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to consider donating to her church, Greater New Hope Community SDA Church, 2125 Fourth Street, Southeast, Canton, Ohio 44707. Condolences may be sent to Barbara Currence Davis, 5024 Fieldgreen Crossing, Stone Mountain, GA 30088.
