Watch Video TributeOn March 23, 2023, Rebecca Cook received her wings and went to walk with the angels. She was 91 years old. She lived her life with an unwavering determination to do what was right. She was a force to be reckoned with, never taking no for an answer, and always striving to make the world a better place for her family and those around her.
Born Rebecca Rosetta Wright on July 11, 1931, in Wyco, West Virginia to the late Rev. John and Elizabeth Wright. Out of that union was nine children: Priscilla, Virginia, John (Monroe), Rebecca, Lucille, Donell, Eugene, Mary, and Louise.
Rebecca was a truly remarkable woman, who lived her life with an unyielding spirit and fierce independence. From a young age, she accepted Christ into her life, following in her father’s footsteps and living life in accordance with her faith.
After graduating from Scranton Hight School in Beckley, West Virginia, Rebecca moved to Cleveland, Ohio, with her eldest sister Priscilla. There, she began her adult life, building a career at Alcoa Aluminum for 44 years and a family that would become the bedrock of her life.
Rebecca married the love her life, David Cook, on July 4, 1953, making the start of a life filled with love, laughter, and family. Together, they raised four children of their own – Cynthia, Arlette, David, and Jermaine – in a home where independence, learning, and hard work were always held in high esteem. In the passing of her older sister Virginia, she received a bonus daughter Michelle Dawson at the age of 13.
Throughout her life, Rebecca was a source of inspiration for all who knew her. Her unwavering faith in God, her commitment to family, and her drive to succeed in everything she did were hallmarks of her character. She was a loving mother, a doting grandmother, and a fierce friend to all who were privileged enough to know her.
Rebecca’s move in 2011 was a testament to the love and devotion that her family held for her. Unable to live on her own any longer, she transitioned to living with her daughter Arlette and her son-in-love Charles, who became her loving caretakes and companions. Under their care Rebecca was showered with love, attention, and affection every day. They made sure that she was always immaculately groomed, with not a strand of hair out of place and her nails and feet always expertly tended to.
But more than just taking care of her physical needs, Arlette and Charles gave Rebecca something even more valuable: their time, attention, and love. Their gift of love will always stay in Rebecca’s heart forever, and it is a tribute to their incredible bond that they shared.
Her niece Stephanie was a beacon of light in Rebecca’s life, always there to offer her love and care whenever she needed it. Despite living across the country from Rebecca, Stephanie always made a point to check in on her and lend her love and support in whatever ways she could. Rebecca also had a Goddaughter, Mikki, who was another person who held a very special place in her heart. Rebecca knew that she could always count on Mikki’s support, love, and affection.
Though she has passed on from this world, Rebecca’s legacy lives on through the many lives she touched along the way. Her independence,
and spirit will continue to inspire those who knew and loved her, reminding us all to live our lives with the same passion and commitment that she did.
