Regina Celestine Veronica Proctor-Godfrey was born the first of 9 children to Eugene and Arcelia Proctor.
She was educated at OLPH elementary school in Washington and public high school. As the oldest child she was loving and caring and also firm and authoritarian. She followed her parents’ instructions to make sure her siblings were safe and cared for.
Regina watched and learned how to cook, clean, and sew while working a summer Job at Bowling Air Force Base. It was there she met the love of her life, Barney Godfrey. They subsequently married, relocated to Cleveland, OH, and started their own family.
After Barney’s military obligation was complete, he managed a SOHIO Service station among other professional endeavors. Regina worked hand and hand with her husband including pumping gas and changing engine oil.
Regina later returned to her home town of Washington, DC, rejoined her home church and reconnected with DC friends and family. It was at this time she became enamored with clown figurines. Her collection of clowns was impressive and she was proud to display them for all to enjoy.
She joyously worked at the Children’s Hospital National Medical Center in Washington, DC until she retired from the workforce. Once retired, she became interested in maintaining her fitness, joining at least 2 different local area senior citizen fitness groups.
When her mother became ill, Regina stepped up and provided daily care until her mother’s passing in 2014. Then she initially became ill in 2016. She faced her challenge with strength and courage. With the love and support of her siblings, she took on her medical condition with great courage. Once stable, in 2020, she returned to Cleveland, OH.
With the love and support of her children, grandchildren, and in-laws, she continued the fight to overcome her condition. Through all of her struggles, she never once placed blame or asked for pity. “I am doing alright” is what she said until her passing.
She was preceded by her parents, Eugene Sr, and Arcelia, her in-law family Barney Godfrey, Sr, Sylvester Godfrey, and Carrie Godfrey.
She is survived by her children, David (Carolyn), Catherine (Elmo), Carrie Godfrey-Whitsett, and Barney Godfrey Jr (Francine), siblings Cynthia Johnson, Eugene Proctor Jr (Bertha), Rosemarie Tolson (Joseph), Janice Jackson, Phyllis Baa’ith, Stephen Proctor, MD, Charita Proctor, Bryan Proctor, and last but not least, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and friends. Her warm smile, loving hugs, and contagious laughter were her lasting gifts to us.
