Reginald L. Johnson Sr., affectionately known as Reg or Reggie to most, was an amazing husband, an outstanding father, a beloved grandfather to his grandchildren and a second father to many young people. He peacefully passed away surrounded by his loving family.
Born on December 26, 1945, to Jack and Margaret Johnson, Reg’s life was filled with service, music, laughter, and unwavering devotion to his loved ones. After graduating from East Tech High School, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force. Over 23 honorable years, he built a distinguished military career, serving as a Jet Engine Mechanic for six years, a Training Technician for eight years, and a recruiter for nine years. His exceptional skills and integrity earned him a distinguished Presidential Unit Citation, multiple commendation medals, and numerous ribbons. Reg’s quiet confidence and dedication made him a valuable asset to his team, and he was proud to serve his country.
Outside of his service in the Air Force, Reg was a man of many passions. He was an avid fisherman who could spend hours by the water, a loyal Cleveland Browns fan who cheered with unwavering hope every season, and a boxing enthusiast who relished watching fights surrounded by family and friends. But above all, his greatest joy was his wife, Mary. Married for 44 beautiful years, the two were inseparable; traveling together, taking long scenic drives, indulging in spontaneous ice cream outings, enjoying club nights, and showing up for their children and grandchildren with unmatched love and support. Their bond was the kind of love story that left an indelible mark on everyone who witnessed it.
A devoted Christian, Reg dedicated his life to Jesus as a young man. He faithfully served at Mt. Zion under Rev. Larry Macon Sr. for over a decade as part of the Pastor’s Staff. Later, he regularly fellow-shipped at Temple of the Living God under Pastor Clifford Flenory, Sr., where he took immense pleasure in witnessing his son Tori preach. Before his health declined, he never missed a Sunday. His faith in Jesus Christ was steadfast, sincere, and lived out in his kindness, humility, and service.
Reg was also a gifted gospel, blues, and jazz guitarist whose musical journey began at the tender age of ten. His talent propelled him across the country, opening doors to play and collaborate with legendary groups like Earth, Wind & Fire and The Dells, and performing with Malachi3, where he played lead guitar and co-produced the song titled “The Way You Love.” Many days, he would spend hours honing his skills and expanding his knowledge of the instrument he passionately played. Music wasn’t just a hobby for him; it was a language he spoke with soul.
Family was the very heartbeat of Reg’s life. He never missed a game, recital, performance, or milestone. He coached, encouraged, corrected, and celebrated his children and grandchildren with a father’s pride and a mentor’s wisdom. If you needed him, he was there, no questions asked.
Reginald Lee Johnson Sr. was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Margaret; his sister, Jackie; and his beloved son, Reggie Jr. He leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and a full life, cherished by his devoted wife, Mary; his sons, Eric, Randy (Lori), and Tori (Shauna); eleven grandchildren: Ryan, Erica “Pooky Johnson”(TJ Johnson), Janai, Tori, Devonte’, Cameron, Cailyn, DaMarcus (Zari), and Morgan; five great-grandchildren: Jaiden, Ava, Princeton, Miyahami, and Nazareth; and a host of other extended family and friends.
Reg was known for his deep love, generous spirit, and full life. In his final days, he was surrounded by the very people who brought him immense joy, his family.
