Robert Christian Desalles Yates Jr., beloved father, husband, son, brother, coach, mentor, friend, and child of God, was born on September 10, 1984, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Loria L. Martin and Robert Yates Sr.
Rob was raised in a tight-knit household alongside his brothers, Damian, Ryan, and Diondre. From a young age, he developed a deep love for basketball and a strong foundation in faith at New Covenant Lutheran Church, where his compassion and love for others took root.
He went on to play as a student-athlete at Sinclair College in Dayton, Ohio, leaving a lasting impression both on and off the court. After returning to Cleveland, Rob deepened his faith, supported his family, and continued building his connection to the game.
Rob found one of life’s greatest blessings in his wife, Tera. Together, they’ve built a beautiful life and raised their three children, CJ, Braylen, and Skylar. Being a father was one of Rob’s greatest joys, and he poured love, energy, and intention into his family every day.
His passion for basketball led him into coaching, where he made a lasting impact at Shaw High School, Padua High School, Orange High School, and as head coach at Maple Heights High School. Rob was dedicated to developing not just athletes, but young men—guiding them to graduate, pursue opportunities, and believe in themselves.
Rob will forever be remembered for his loving, selfless, and guiding spirit, and his deep commitment to his family, faith, and community. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and inspired. Well, done, good and faithful servant.
Rob is survived by his wife, Tera; his children, CJ, Braylen, and Skylar; his father, Robert “Bob” Yates Sr.; parents-in-law, Anthony and Kathryn Whitlow; his brothers, Damian, Ryan, and Diondre; and a host of extended family and loved ones.
