Ronald Lee Bass was born on June 2, 1950 in Cleveland, Ohio to Dorothy Young and Willie Bass. Ronald’s love for Jesus Christ was confessed at an early age and he continued his profession of faith into his adult life in attendance at St. James Lutheran church with his son Brandon Bass. In more recent years, Ron had attended The Word Church.

Ronald was educated in the Cleveland Public School System. He attended and graduated from John Hay high school in 1968. Ronald was very athletic and went on to attend Ohio University where he received a basketball scholarship while studying Physical Education. After graduating from college, Ronald followed his passion for sports and athletics into a career working for the City of Cleveland’s Recreation Department. After starting his career, Ronald met and married Ovetta Bass and from their union came their only child, son, Brandon Bass.

Ronald worked as a recreation center supervisor at Fairfax, Kovacic and Sterling recreation centers, which spanned a 30-year career from which he retired in 2007 from the City of Cleveland as a Recreation Center Manager at Sterling Recreation Center. Ronald had a deep passion for mentoring and coaching inner city youth sports teams. He often transported young adults to major sporting events, such as games with the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Cleveland Indians sponsored by the city. He also became a certified Referee for the State of Ohio and was enthusiastic about refereeing games for teams of all ages throughout Northeastern Ohio. Additionally, Ronald worked as a Public Safety Dispatcher for Cuyahoga Community College for 11 years. After retirement, Ronald worked as a Funeral Associate for Calhoun Funeral Home.

Ronald was an attentive and very devoted father to his son Brandon. People would often remark that wherever you saw Ronald, you would always see Brandon with him. Ron was also a very loving son to his father Willie and stepmother, Atline Bass, and a loving and caring brother to his younger sister, Kimberly. Ron enjoyed traveling, sports, music, and dancing. He loved to dress fashionably and go to his favorite spots in Cleveland to dance and socialize. Ron was extremely outgoing and a social butterfly. He never knew a stranger and was well known and liked by all who met him. He touched many lives over the years through mentoring, life-long friendships, and community service. Ronald will be deeply missed.

In recent years, Ronald’s health declined, and he passed away on June 13, 2020 at his home.

He is preceded in death by his mother Dorothy and father Willie.

Ron leaves to mourn his passing his son Brandon Bass, his stepmother Atline Bass, sister Kimberly and brother in law Lawrence Jones; one aunt, Dicie Bass; his very close cousin, William L. Bass; cousins Darnell, William, Roger and Randy Bass, Tina Wadsworth and a host of other relatives, along with many, many friends.

My Last Party

By Francis Lee Stroud Goldhorn

When you come to my last party,

Don’t come with faces long.

But come with memories that are pleasant,

In your heart let there be a song…..

When you come to my last party,

My Lord will be the host.

Because it is He amongst all my friends,

Who really loved me most.

He bore my cross at Calvary,

He bears my cross today.

And when you leave he will still be with me,

To comfort me along the way.

So when you gather today,

Remember how I loved you all

In my own special way.

I did the best that I knew how,

It’s up to God to take care of me now.

Ronald Lee Bass went home to be with the Lord on June 13, 2020. Ronald was preceded in death by his father, Willie Bass. Ronald leaves to cherish his memories, step-mother, Atline Bass; son, Brandon Bass; siblings, Kimberly Bass and brother in-law Lawrence Jones; cousins, William L. Ron Bass was a very good brother. I have memories of him when I was a little boy running Fairfax Rec on Central. He and my father (Brobe) and my uncles would have some very competitive basketball games in that gym, they were fun to watch. I knew Ronald, for many years. He was a “Groomsman” in my wedding. I remember his love for sports. It has been several years since we were in contact. But friendship, does not fade because you have not talked to a person. I will always remember his voice. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones.

Death ends a life, not a relationship. Gone too soon — but his love lives on. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalms 34:18 You’re in my thoughts and prayers..

Please accept our most deepest heartfelt sympathy. Ronald came to our house many times as a kid when he lived on Lakeview Avenue. There are too many fond memories to write about but one thing I do remember about Ronald was his love for basketball (smile). He often talked about it and played all the time. Rest peacefully Ronald, you will be missed.
