Rose Elaine Davis, 77, of Pepper Pike, Ohio, passed away on February 10, 2026. A devoted wife, mother, sister, educator, and friend, Elaine’s life was defined by her deep faith, her dedication to education, and her unwavering belief in the power of kindness and preparation.
Born on January 26, 1949, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, Elaine was the beloved daughter of Percy and Rosie Lee Taylor. The second oldest of 6 children, she grew up in a family that valued education and faith—principles that she carried throughout her life. Elaine learned to play the piano and organ as a child. It was this love of music that shaped her life and cultivated her career. She earned a Bachelors degree in Music Education from Dillard University followed by a Masters in Education from Cleveland State University.
Elaine began her career as a music teacher, inspiring students with her talent and enthusiasm. Over the next four decades, she rose through the ranks of Cleveland’s Public School System, culminating as Assistant Superintendent. Additionally in 1998, the U.S. Department of Education proclaimed Whitney M. Young Middle School a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence while Elaine was principal of the school. After her remarkable 30-year career in CPS, she retired for the first time. However, soon after retirement she became the Superintendent of Warrensville Heights City Schools. After her second retirement she continued to mentor young Principals and Administrators. Her professional journey reflected her firm belief that every child deserved a chance to learn and that educators had the power to change lives.
On December 26, 1971, Elaine married Dwight Davis, marking the beginning of a 54-year partnership built on love, respect, and shared values. Together, they raised two daughters, Zakia and Monique Davis, who were her pride and joy. In later years, Elaine delighted in her role as grandmother to Jillian, Mariah, Aiden, and Corbin, with whom she shared her enthusiasm for music, travel, and family traditions.
Faith was central to Elaine’s life. She was an active and cherished member of Olivet Institutional Baptist Church for more than 50 years. There, she led the Children’s Choir, (Echoes of Joy) for 25 years, founded the Cathedral Handbell Choir, and served faithfully on the Deaconess Board. Her musical gifts and nurturing spirit enriched the worship experience for countless families and children, leaving a legacy that will resonate for generations. Elaine’s community involvement extended far beyond the classroom and the church. She was a proud “Golden” member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. (Alpha Omega Chapter), The Barrister Wives (Cleveland Chapter), member of The Links, Incorporated (charter member of the Western Reserve Chapter), and Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated (Cleveland Chapter). In her later years, she continued to be active in these organizations, faithfully attending meetings and service events.
Elaine will be remembered as classy, spirited, and inspirational. She believed in being presentable, prepared, and forthright, yet always remained approachable and kind. Her grace and confidence inspired others to pursue excellence while staying true to themselves. Whether she was teaching, cooking a family meal or playing the piano, Elaine made every moment meaningful. She loved traveling with her family, some of her most memorable destinations were Lagos, Nigeria, Dubai, and New York City.
Elaine is survived by her devoted husband, Dwight; daughters, Zakia (Kunbi) and Monique (Keith); her grandchildren, Jillian, Mariah, Aiden, and Corbin; her siblings, Dr. Malcolm Taylor, Dr. Connie Taylor, and Reginald Taylor; and many dear friends and extended family.
