Roselyn Pleasure was born May 28, 1952, in Cleveland, Ohio from the union of Horace II and Ruby Duncan (both deceased). As a child, Roselyn attended Cleveland Public Schools. She also attended East Technical High School and received her GED. She received a Medical Assistance Certificate as well as an associate’s degree from Cuyahoga Community College. She was baptized early and a faithful servant. She was an active member of Mt Herman Baptist Church where she was on the Ladies Guild and a member of the Revelation Choir. She later joined True Vine Missionary Baptist Church and became one of the nurses. She attended regularly until her illness prevented her from driving. She encouraged the youth in the family to attend with her and as a result, a few of them became members as well.
Although Roselyn obtained a Medical Assistance Certificate, she did not pursue a career in the medical field. Instead, she took the Federal Civil Service test and obtained a job with the Navy Finance Center, which later became Defense Finance and Accounting Service. She started as a File Clerk in the mail room and eventually held a position as a Reserve Pay Analyst. While working at DFAS, she was also a member of Blacks in Government. This career with DFAS provided the opportunity for her to travel to places like Puerto Rico and Germany. She eventually retired after more than 31 years of federal service.
Roselyn was the 4th child of 6 siblings. However, if you knew her you would think she was the oldest. Whatever family function there was, Roz would take control and assign the duties. She was always the one the family would turn to for advice or direction. She raised 4 children, then 4 grandchildren after the loss of her daughter Arkidia. Her house was the go-to place for family gatherings. After the movie Soul Food came out, it was suggested that Sunday dinner would be at her house. If you wanted something to eat, you knew where to be Sunday evening. She was preceded in death by her parents Horace II and Ruby Duncan, her husband John Pleasure, her daughter Arkidia Duncan, her siblings Sandra Moon, Deborah Barclay, Jacqueline Burton and Gregory Duncan, and her grandson Kevin Duncan Sr.
Roselyn joined the Thursday Nite Mixed Bowling League and was a bowler for many years. She even encouraged her family to bowl. One year, the family almost took over one of the summer leagues that she “made” them join. Some of the treasured memories include attending sporting events for her children and grandchildren: track meets, softball and baseball games, football and basketball games. Attending family activities and of course traveling. She loved having the ability to take her grandchildren to Disney World after the loss of their mom.
Roselyn departed this life on August 8, 2024. She leaves to cherish her memory her children Nicole Johnson, Stephanie Peagler (Romano), Jason Pleasure; her grandchildren Solita, Melvin, Kevin Sr. (deceased), Khadijah, Keith, Dymond, Che Jr., Jayla, Janyah, Harmony, and Jayshawn; her
great-grandchildren Roya, Eden, Kevin Jr., Riley, and Wynter; her brother Horace Duncan III (Donna); her nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
