Roy Howard Young, age 91, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2026. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, friend, and mentor, lived a life marked by service, loyalty, and unwavering integrity.

Roy was born on August 30, 1934, in Acworth, Georgia, and moved to Akron, Ohio, at a young age. He later answered the call to serve his country as a proud member of the United States Army, where he served with honor and distinction. His years in uniform reflected courage, discipline, and a steadfast commitment to his fellow soldiers. The values he carried from his military service-duty, honor, and respect-remained guiding principles throughout his life. Upon returning to Akron, Roy met the love of his life, Barbara J. Bell, and the two were married in 1960.

Beyond his military service, Roy attended the University of Akron, where he earned a B.S. in Education and an M.A. in School Counseling, plus 18 credit hours beyond his M.A. He went on to serve Akron Public Schools as a teacher and as an elementary and middle school counselor for 32 years. He also worked as a recreational counselor at Hawthornden State Hospital for 32 years.

In 1962, Roy found lifelong brotherhood in Kappa Alpha Psi Inc., where he embodied the ideals of leadership, fellowship, and service to others. His fraternity brothers remember him as a man of character-generous with his support, encouraging in his words, and always well-dressed and refined.

Many may not know that Roy Howard Young-not Ron Neal-was the original “Superfly,” a slang term meaning “excellent” or “very cool.” He was known for his polished style and luxury automobiles. As a worldwide traveler, Roy enjoyed exploring new places and experiences with his family. He also enjoyed playing the piano, and playing golf with his friends, Tiretown clubmates, and nephews. Most importantly, Roy loved the Lord and served faithfully at St. Thomas Baptist Church in Akron, Ohio.

Roy’s legacy was one of quiet strength, generosity, and purpose. He believed in lifting others up, keeping his word, and living with integrity. Through his work in education, his fraternity brotherhood, and his service to the community, he left an enduring mark on all who knew him.

Roy is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Barbara J. Young; his dedicated daughter, Dr. Roytunda E. Stabler and son-in-law, Darrell Stabler, whom he affectionately called his son; and his beloved granddaughters, Briahna (Dylan) Mandell and Shalethia Taylor, and great-grandson, LaTrell Taylor, each of whom he dearly loved and cherished.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jacqueline D. Young; his mother, Corrie Young; his father, Tulley Young; his sisters, Lorine Watts, Mary Johnson, and Ursula Turlene Clemons; and his brother, Clarence Young.

Roy’s memory will live on in the hearts of his many nieces, nephews, friends, comrades, and fraternity brothers, all of whom were blessed to share in his life’s journey.
