Roy Lawrence Smith was born in Akron, Ohio, on July 24, 1956, to Willie Smith and Versie Lee (Head) Smith. He and his twin brother, Ray, were the youngest of six children.
He was educated in the Akron public school system and graduated from Garfield High School in 1974. Looking for a fresh start, he moved to San Diego, California, where he obtained his Associates Degree in Business Administration. After a few years, he realized Akron was his home so he moved back and lived there until his transition.
Roy was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He loved his family, all he considered friends and made sure that everyone knew it. There wasn’t a holiday or special occasion that went by without him calling, texting or sending a Facebook message wishing you well. He always had an encouraging word to share and remained hopeful for life. He will be dearly missed and remembered by his loved ones.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two of his brothers, Willie who was lovingly known as Ed, and Wayman.
Roy is survived by his daughter, Bailee Smith; his son, William Smith; his grandchildren, Lawren Griffin and Alaina Harrison; his twin brother, Ray Smith; brother, Johnny Smith; sister, Betty Gilmore; nephews who were more like brothers, Darnell and Damon; special friend, Michelle Martin; and numerous other family members and friends.
