Rubie Lee Whitlow Wood was born February 4, 1936, to the union of the late Ralph Whitlow Jr. and late Mozell Moore Whitlow in Union Springs, Alabama. She was one of six children. Rubie passed away in her home of natural causes on May 19, 2023.
Rubie graduated from South Macon High School in Macon County, Alabama and later moved to Cleveland, Ohio during the 1950’s. She lived with family members in Cleveland and worked various jobs to contribute to her family back in Tuskegee, Alabama and help her father. Rubie gave birth to her first son, Alexander Jordan in September of 1958. While working at the University School in Cleveland, she met Harold G. Wood. That meeting blossomed into a lifetime together. On August 14, 1967, she married her devoted husband of 55 years. To their union was born their son Edward that December. They made their initial home in East Cleveland, Ohio with their son Edward and later moved to Cleveland Heights, Ohio in 1987.
Rubie was a seamstress for over thirty years. She enjoyed a simple life with hobbies that included sewing, gardening, dancing, reading the Bible, and listening to music. She was a long-term member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church until death.
Rubie was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Buck Whitlow, Moses B. Whitlow, Daniel Whitlow and Bebe Whitlow.
Her survivors include two sons Alexander Jordan of Maple Heights, Ohio and Edward (Romenita) Wood of St. Augustine, Florida; one sister Mary Whitlow of East Cleveland, Ohio; and four grandchildren, Alexander Lavelle Hobbs, Lorente Hobbs, and Summer Jordan, all of Maple Heights, Ohio and Jordan M. Wood of St. Augustine, Florida; four great grandchildren Alex, Oman, Jeremiah and Monroe; her church family, a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Rubie lived her life as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She loved her husband and family. Her kindness, gentleness and smile will be missed.
