Ruby Louise Franklin Grant was born on October 30, 1938, in Greensboro, Alabama to the late Robert
Louis Franklin and Bessie Harris Franklin. She was the seventh of ten siblings; Lizzie Hines, Bessie Allen, Roberta Laffitte, Bertha Ryans, Robert Fred Franklin, Walter Franklin, Annie Banks and Burnie Hill who have all been called home to glory. Her only remaining sibling is Mary A. Stewart of Atlanta, GA. and one sister-in- law Greta Franklin.
Ruby accepted Jesus Christ as her savior at an early age and joined Bay Spring AME Zion church in
Greensboro, Alabama. After graduating from Hale County Training High School in 1955, she moved to Cleveland, Ohio to live with her sister and brother-in-law, Willie and Roberta Laffitte. Soon after moving to Cleveland, she met Willie (Grant) Muhammad, and they married in 1963. They remained married for 55 years until his death in 2018. She and her late husband converted to Islam in 1987.
Ruby, her aunt, Ruby Lockett and her sister, Roberta Laffitte pursued a career in nursing. Both Ruby and Roberta would complete their classes at St. Luke’s Hospital to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) in the late 1960’s. During her career, Ruby work for Kaiser Hospitals and skilled nursing facilities throughout Cleveland. She would retire from Maple Care as a Nursing Supervisor in 2002 after many years of outstanding service.
Ruby loved to travel and spend time with family. She loved to shop & have lunch with her sisters, Berta, and Munchie (Anne Pearl). Most holidays were spent with her siblings and their families that lived in Cleveland and other cities in Ohio. Family members from other states would sometimes join the Cleveland family for holidays and special occasions. A good time was inevitable! Ruby loved to make us laugh with stories from her childhood growing up with nine siblings and many cousins nearby. Ruby loved to watch sports especially football and basketball; she was a true Cleveland fan win or lose.
Before her health started to decline, Ruby, Willie and their granddaughters, Shonita, Vanessa, Danielle, Kim and Chauntier would spend weekends together shopping all around the city. After shopping they would head back to their grandparents’ home where they would clean, bake and enjoy the rest of the weekend. When she was able, Ruby loved to bake. Her coconut cake and sweet potato pies were family favorites. Ruby’s generosity, smile and great sense of humor will truly be missed.
