Samuel Henderson was born in Gorgas, Alabama on March 19, 1933 to Samuel and Rosa Henderson. He passed away at age 84, peacefully in his sleep on Sunday morning, September 3, 2017.
He was educated in the Walker County public school system in Parrish, Alabama until he enlisted in the United States Army. During his three year tour, he fought in the Korean War. He received the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. After being honorably discharged, he relocated to Akron, Ohio and attended the University of Akron for one year.
He initially worked at the Orville Quality Casting Company in Orrville, Ohio but was hired by the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio as one of the first African-Americans in skilled trades until the plant closed.
He loved to hunt in his spare time, but his most treasured memories were spending time with family and talking about the gospel.
Shortly after marrying, he was baptized by Bro. P.E. Butler and was added to the Eastern Church of Christ. He later moved his membership to the Wooster Avenue Church of Christ where he served as a Bible School Teacher, Interim/Assistant Minister and Television Evangelist. He continued as a Television Evangelist at the North Hill Church of Christ until he became ill. He spent his final years as a member of the Westside Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by eight of his siblings and one son. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mae Lee (King) Henderson; daughter, Regina Henderson; son, Samuel (Melanie) Henderson; daughter-in-law, Rose Webb, sisters, Mary Lee Elizabeth Williams and Bernice Rasberry; brother, Larry (Juanita) Henderson; sister-in-laws, Delois Henderson, Elnora Harper and Gloria Henderson; grandchildren, Ashley and Scianna Webb, Desmond and Euella Serrant, Greyson, Camille, and Taylor Henderson; great grandchild, Kiara Holt and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
