Sandra A. Scott Thornton was born in Akron, Ohio, to the union of Henderson and Anna Mae Broden Scott on October 27, 1946, she was the fourth of six children. Sandy peacefully left this life on June 30, 2021, at her home in Akron, Ohio.
She was a graduate of South High School. She received her bachelor’s degree in business after attending Akron and Ohio State Universities. After receiving her license to sell real estate, she was employed at the Real Estate Building in Columbus, OH, and later worked in the unclaimed fund’s department. She retired in 1998, when her health began to fail.
While living in Columbus, Sandy met and married Novell Lee Thornton. She became a widow at his passing on January 14, 2019.
Sandra’s spiritual care was overseen by her pastors, Andy, and Rachel Neal at “Wind Beneath My Wings” Christian Fellowship in Norton, Ohio. During her time at “Wind,” she served on staff and as the Women’s Day Chairperson for several years and assisted in the Snack Shop. Although she was quiet, Sandy willingly made her contributions to her church service.
She had a passion for fostering children and did so for many years. Two such children stole her heart, so she became a mother to Shawn and Ronald Scott. “Wind” had the pleasure of seeing her care for several of these young ones. Her patience with them was remarkable as some of those she fostered had ongoing problems.
Among her favorite pastimes were fishing, football, ceramics, and reading. She loved learning new words and she owned and read many dictionaries. She also loved to shop…a lot. She enjoyed new clothes and a nice car. She had style and “Spunk”.
Having been preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers, Henderson Jr., and Myron Scott, and her dearly loved nephew, Antoine.
Sandra Thornton leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Shawn (Angel) Scott, Ronald Scott; 4 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild Alevian Scott; brother, James Scott; sisters, Beverly Chambers, Carolyn (Robert Brown) Scott, and Leola Scott; along with her nephews, nieces, and a host of relatives and friends, as well as the many foster children she cared for. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the family in care of Stewart & Calhoun Funeral Home.
