A Trailblazer, Mentor, and Legacy of Excellence in Aerospace and Education
Sandra “Sandy” M. Shuler was a trailblazer, educator, and mentor whose life reflected strength, faith, and unwavering commitment to lifting others. As one of the first Black women to shape national aerospace education efforts, Sandy broke barriers at NASA and beyond—championing diversity, excellence, and opportunity wherever she served. Her legacy spans decades of transformative work in education, from leading workforce development to improving student outcomes in Cleveland Public Schools through innovative STEM initiatives. Sandy’s “How-To” Aerospace manuscript became a national model, and her passion extended into college classrooms where she taught business and leadership, always pouring into her students with wisdom and care. After retiring from NASA, she founded her own consulting firm, Quade Training & Development, continuing her mission to empower individuals and organizations through leadership coaching and change management.
Sandy’s many accolades include over 50 awards and the prestigious Presidential Equal Employment Opportunity Medal for her groundbreaking efforts in equity and education. Despite her fiery spirit that earned her the nickname ‘Red’ from those who knew her best, Sandy’s heart was as fierce as her loyalty to those she loved. Her passion was unmatched—whether in the garden, the kitchen, or the lives she touched with her strength and unshakable determination. To those closest to her, she was more than just a mother, aunt, grandmother, sister, and friend; she was a force of nature, her boldness and love leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her greatest pride, however, was her family. She is survived by her devoted daughter Bridget Forte, beloved grandchildren Christina and Julian Johnson, and stepdaughter Amanda Hunter (Two Grandsons). She also leaves behind her loving siblings Sharon, Betty, Valerie (Alvin), Ernest Sr., Dolores Jr. (Reggie), and Millard as well as a host of nieces and nephews who carry forward her legacy of love and leadership.
She was predeceased by her parents James Sr. and Dolores Forte Sr., her husband Adam Shuler, brothers James Jr. and Martin Sr., and nephews James III, Sam Jr., and Ernest Jr. Their spirits now reunite with hers in eternal peace. A private graveside burial will be held on July 30, 2025, at Holy Cross Cemetery, 14609 Brookpark Rd, Cleveland, OH 44142. In addition, a memorial service to honor and celebrate Sandy’s life will take place on November 1, 2025, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 4341 E 131st St, Garfield Heights, OH 44105.
Sandy’s life was a light—and that light will continue to shine through the many lives she touched. During these difficult times, the family invites you to join in remembrance, keeping Sandy’s in your thoughts and prayers, and cherishing the many memories made together.
