Shelba Jean Smith was born July 9, 1948 to John and Esther Johnson in Cleveland, Ohio. She was one of five children, Herman Pope (deceased), Madeline Pope Petty, Brenda Johnson Sanders and Roger Johnson. Shelba accepted Christ at the age of 29 at Cannon Missionary Baptist Church. She linked her fellowship to Community Christian Church, but returned to fellowship with the Saints at Cannon in 2020.
Shelba was educated in the Cleveland Public School system, acquiring her diploma then continued her education to receive her masters in Theology.
For 43 years Shelba was the wife of Malven H. Smith Sr. She considered him an excellent provider and father. A special thank you to their youngest daughter, Dana, who assisted Malven in caring for Shelba during her last days.
Shelba was the proud mother of four children, Adora Jean Mays (deceased), Ronald S. F. Mitchell, Malden H. Smith II, and Dana Marie Smith. She was a honored grandmother of 13 and blessed great grandmother of 8.
One of Shelba’s infamous statements, which she made often, was “Silver and gold I have not, but such as I have, I give to my offspring and that is a heritage in the Lord. With the Lord all things are possible!”
In the words of Shelba Smith, “During the course of 72 years, I have learned that Jesus is Love and my relationship with him has taught me how to love unconditionally. I also have learned in that period of time that smiling is so uplifting to your spirit. No matter what is going on in the world, I can be happy in good and bad times. I wish the same for each of you! Also, I ask if anyone feels offended or left out not knowing, please forgive me. My concern was not to be a burden soon after the demise of my daughter, Adora Mays.”
Cherished memories of Shelba will be had by her husband Malven H. Smith, her children, grandchildren, sisters, brothers and a host of family and friends.
