Sherwin “Nick” Mark Nurse III was born in Akron, Ohio, to the much beloved Evonne (Epps) Nurse-Garrett and Sherwin M. Nurse II. He was a lifetime resident of the community. Known for his easy-going manner and warm smile, often accompanied by a kind word, a good story, or sage advice, Sherwin was loved and respected by many, near and far.
In the West Akron neighborhood that he called home, he is well-regarded for his dedication and willingness to always lend a helping hand to family, friends, and neighbors. Those lucky enough to know him, recall him fondly as an “all-around good guy.” He was indeed a good man, and a great father, who will be sorely missed.
Sherwin was a 1981 graduate of John R. Buchtel High School, where he excelled as a star quarterback, and received many honors and accolades for his role on Buchtel’s winning football team. Like most “1040” graduates, he remained a true Griffin for all of his days.
After graduating high-school, Sherwin enrolled in truck-driving school to obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL), which would later shape a successful driving career. In 1983, he made the brave decision to enlist in the United States Army. While serving his country, he had the opportunity to travel extensively, before ultimately getting stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Upon his return to Akron, Sherwin put his CDL to immediate use when he was hired as a truck driver for Sheng Hung Hong Chinese Produce, where he worked for ten years. With this experience and his learned expertise, he became a sought-after skilled driver, who was proficient in all the rules and regulations of the road. In 2006, he broadened his career in the industry by joining Schwebel’s Baking Company, from where it was his plan to eventually retire. His colleagues remember him as one of the company’s best drivers; as a devoted employee who NEVER missed work; as well as someone who was reliable and dedicated … much as he was in life.
In 2006, Sherwin gave his life to the Lord, and was baptized at Zion Temple Baptist Church, Akron, Ohio. All who knew him can attest that he lived his life in the Lord well before that day, yet he embraced making it official in the church.
Sherwin was a devoted son, father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Sherwin’s smile and commitment to being a good man and great father, will be dearly missed by his children: Tiffany Nurse-Sanders (LaTarris) of Akron, OH; Destany Nurse-Smith (Kelci) of Las Vegas, NV; and Sherwin Nurse IV of Arizona. He also leaves behind cherished grandchildren; granddaughters, Faith Jones (Akron), Kora Woodson (Las Vegas, NV), Avianna Thompson (Arizona); grandson, Atlas Nurse (Arizona); and great-granddaughter, In’dalaya Peterson (Akron). Further, he leaves beloved brother, Marc (David) Nurse of Cuyahoga Falls, OH; sisters; Terri Nurse and Sherri Nurse of Akron, OH; special cousins: Marion, Aaron, Beverly and Robin all of Akron, OH, and a host of nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved.
