Shirley Ann Summers was born in Akron, OH to the late Martha and Hampton Summers on May 5, 1943. She lived in Akron all her life. She attended Akron Public Schools and graduated from East Senior High school in 1962. She also attended Hammel College in 1963.
Shirley was a dedicated social worker for Jobs & Family Services for 37 years and retired in May 2002. She was also a dedicated member of The Lucy Street Block Club, The Bowlerettes, The E.A.C.H Theatre group, and the “Down The Way” Social Group.
She would often travel and take vacations around the world in her spare time. She had a special way of making everyone feel loved and welcome in her home. Her door was always open, and friends became family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Marion, Hampton Jr., and Benjamin; sisters, Mildred, Dorothy, Mary, Margaret, and Francis; special cousin, Katherine Jeffries; grandson, Jarriel Hitchcock; and special friend, George Hamilton.
She is survived by daughter, Vanessa (James) Hitchcock; sons, Vance Summers, Tracy Summers, James (Jamaica) Heil; special niece, Stephanie (James) Wimberly; special nephews, Christopher Glasper, and Brian Glasper; 6 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; best friends, Delores Jones, Lillie Mae Scriggs, Gene Wicks, Helen Owens, Wyvonnia Long, Fannie Harbin, and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and the Lucy Street family.
