Squire Roosevelt Tyus was born November 12, 1929, in Haywood County, Brownsville, Tennessee, to Ernest and Emma (Cobb)Tyus. He was the seventh of eleven children.
Born into a large family of many siblings, was affectionately named, and called “Bubba” for the duration of his childhood and beyond. His religious training began at an early age. Throughout his youth Bishop was noted for his spiritual focus and attention to being upstanding and pleasing to God and his family. Little did he know, God was preparing him for a life of dedicated service to him.
Squire attended and graduated from Carver High School, in Brownsville, Tennessee. He was then drafted into the United States Army to fight in the Korean war.
Bishop would preach the word and bring souls to him if he sparred his life. The word of the Lord came to him, I Timothy 1:11, “According to this glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful putting me in the ministry.” After he completed his duty in the army, he met and married the love of his life, Idella Graves. Shortly thereafter, he enrolled at A & I State college in Nashville, Tennessee to study medicine. He transferred to Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee to finish his degree in Education and start his own family.
As a young minister, he was determined to keep his commitment and spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. Minister Tyus had a 30-minute radio spot to spread the gospel in Humbolt, Tennessee, in addition to traveling every Sunday to Brownsville to his church. This kind of dedication would not have been possible if he did not have the support of his wife and in-laws to help with their six children. Bishop moved to Cleveland after the rest of his family relocated.
The time arrived when his father had passed, his mother and the rest of his siblings relocated up North to the state of Ohio. Bishop made the move to Cleveland, Ohio shortly after and continued his ministry and having the strong support system from his loving family members.
Bishop secured his first job in Cleveland, Ohio at TRW. Next he was employed by the Cleveland Board of Education as Security Personnel for many High School in a 30-year span ranging from John Hay to East Tech. This was a lifelong testament of the difference he made in the lives of so many students who passed through the doors. Bishop was well known among all of students as “Chief”. Anyone who knew “Chief” knew him as a serious, God-fearing man. It was said by many people that you didn’t want to mess with Chief because of the God in him.
Bishop loved playing baseball. At every church picnic, there had to be a baseball game where he was always the pitcher. Bishop being small in stature, would challenge any person to a race and let you know he would win! Most people would probably describe him as a jack of all trade and a master of none. He would try to fix anything; play any musical instrument you put in his hand and would even teach you how to sing. He loved quartet music and was instrumental in starting the “One Way Apostolic Gospel Singers”. His motivation and love of music materialized in many forms via many people. His true calling was ministering of the word of God. His sermons touched your soul and called for truth. His favorite song was “One Way to God”. Bishop never stopped encouraging a soul to Christ, pursuing education, and showing love to everyone he had the opportunity to talk to.
