Sylvia L. Atwater Burns, age 79, passed away on January 25, 2023.
Sylvia L. Atwater-Burns, who was born Sylvia Louise Owens, July 24th of 1944 in Cleveland Ohio, was the daughter of the late Dowood and Evelyn Owens and sister of Eddy Jackson, Mavin Owns, Dowood Owens Dr., Beverly Owens, James Owens and Sandra Owens.
Early in life, Sylvia attended Cleveland Public Schools including Rawlings Junior High School and East Tech High School, home of the Scarabs. She made a career with Commerce Bank (now Huntington Bank), where she worked for 25 years until she retired in 2005 to take care of her God gifted son.
Sylvia was baptized as a Christian early in life and attended Unity Baptist Church. In 1964, she married Ronald Atwater, and their union was blessed with three children; Monica, Lance and Ronald Jr.
Sylvia loved to spend time with her family, so she had a room added to her home so she could spend time with them and to take care of her son. She also loved to skate and work in her yard attending to her flowers and plants. During the seasons, she would decorate outside her home with the neighbors for Halloween and Christmas, which was her favorite season.
Sylvia touched many loves with the love she had for others. She was a such a dedicated and faithful mother, that although it limited how much she could do outside her home, she was determined to take care of her son and not leave him to the care of others.
Sylvia departed this earthly life on Wednesday, January 25th, 2023 at the age of 79. She is survived by her three children; Monica Atwater, Lance Atwater, Ronald Atwater Jr., loving partner and best friend Abukhalid Ousman, 5 grandchildren; Leland Atwater, Naaila Semidey, Ronique Atwater, Ronnetta Atwater (Wan McCray), Ronald Atwater III along with 14 great-grandchildren.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her father, Dowood Owens, mother, Evelyn Owens, brother, Marvin Owns, and sisters Beverly and Sandra Wright

I am grateful to have had Sylvia as a mentor and friend. We met when I started my job at Union Commerce Bank after I graduated college. She took me under her wing, trained and encouraged me to work harder to achieve my goal to join the banks management training program. Whenever an opportunity arose in any department, she supported me in getting my foot in the door so I could gain the experience necessary to further my career. She advised me to move on when I did not get accepted in the program as that was not the only bank in town and I followed her advice eventually becoming a VP. I used the skills she taught me to trained young graduates in management.
She supported me both professionally and personally even advising me on who I should marry, and she was always right. I married her choice. I remember her laughter telling me, "Girl that man loves you., more than you know."
Her voice was music/joy/laughter/love and her smile was beauty. Sylvia loved, supported and protected her children and family with the strength of a lioness. She was wisdom to me and she gave me more than she could ever know. Her spirit and wisdom will be in my heart and mind forever and with others who I was able to share her knowledge with.
