Veronica Delores Calloway came into this world on August 25, 1947, to Louis and Mary McGowan in Akron, Ohio. She went home to be with the Lord on December 22, 2022. In her early years, she attended Robinson and David Hill Elementary Schools, and later graduated from Garfield High School in 1965.
Veronica attended Grace Cathedral church on Canton Road in Akron, Ohio for many years where she enjoyed hearing the Word of God and volunteering for the community.
Veronica graduated from the University of Akron in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in Education and later received her master’s degree in Education. She became an elementary school teacher in 1970, teaching 4th, 5th, and 6th grades specializing in Reading and Mathematics. Veronica educated and influenced the minds of many young individuals in the Akron Public School district, beginning at Brian Elementary and ending at Miller South Performing Arts School. She also tutored students in after-school programs. Veronica was a dedicated teacher for 36 years, her passion for educating and enlightening young minds stood out in her work.
Veronica and William Danny Calloway were married in 1970, and to this union, Deandra Renee Calloway was born.
In her free time, Veronica loved to garden. It could be said that she had a green thumb! Her talent and love for growing flowers earned her a “Keep Akron Beautiful” award 10 times! You could find her sitting on her porch, whether it be sunshine or rain, watching her flowers grow.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Danny Calloway; and parents, Louis and Mary McGowan.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Deandra Renee Henderson (William Lorenzo Turner); grandson, Vaughn Deon Henderson; great-grandchild, Zachai Saunders; sisters, Jettie Janice McGowan, Yavonda Lynn Daughtery (Leroy Daughtery); and Tessie Marie Douglass-Landon (Jaford Landon); sister-in-law, Marale Glazier; niece, Latoni Harris; nephews, Harold Foster, and Robert Douglass; great-nieces, Asia Harris, Mikayla Foster, and Trinidi Foster; along with many cousins and a host of family and friends.
