Wash McCall Jr. was born January 23, 1938, to Wash Sr. and Lula McCall in Hayneville, Alabama where, in his early childhood, he attended Russell Elementary School and later became a graduate of Calhoun High School in Lowndes County, Alabama.
In 1960, Wash was taught and baptized into the Newtown Church of Christ in Montgomery, Alabama under the ministry of Fred D. Gray. In 1963, Wash met Rebecca S. Jones. While they dated, he taught her the gospel of Christ and she was baptized. In June of 1966, Wash and Rebecca married. Shortly after, they decided to move to Akron, Ohio. Wash was employed at the Babcock & Wilcox company where he attended welding school and became an exceptionally outstanding welder. He was also an advocate for equal opportunity for employees. He retired from B&W Company after 31 years of service.
Wash and Rebecca placed membership with the Garfield Avenue Church of Christ which later became the Wooster Avenue Church of Christ. Wash became faithful and committed to the cause of Christ which led him to become the Associate Minister under Minister Norvie Cottingham. He also became the Minister of Music as he directed the chorus and lead songs. He and Wanda Swails worked together to teach songs to the church. Wash was also the Minister of Evangelism while he and Rebecca directed the youth.
In 1984, Wash started South End Church of Christ in Barberton, Ohio. Sixteen years later, the church moved to Akron and became the North Hill Church of Christ where Wash continued to serve as minister until his retirement in 2015. As the Minister Emeritus, Wash continued in his passion to train members in evangelism ministry. He has preached for many Ohio State Lectureships and Gospel Meetings in Ohio, Alabama and Georgia. He continued, after many years, to be a supportive member of the Sponsors for Southwestern Christian College. In 2018, Wash received the Unsung Heroes Award during the Salute to Significant African American Males given by the Ohio Black Women’s Leadership Caucus.
Wash was preceded in death by his daughter, Vanessa G. McCall; son, Stephen D. McCall Sr.; sisters, Anna (Rannie) Bruce and Mariah (Willie) Givhan; brothers, Willie McCall and George McCall.
His memory is cherished by his loving wife, Rebecca; daughter, Sandra D. McCall of Copley, OH; grandson, Stephen D. (Tyisha) McCall Jr. of Wadsworth, OH; two great-granddaughters, Avianna and Kaia McCall of Wadsworth, OH; sister, Celia Sanders of Stow, OH; sister-in-law, Annie (Freeman) Shields of Farmington, MI; brother-in-law, George (Mary) Jones of Montgomery, AL; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, adopted children, church family and friends.
