Webb Horton, affectionately known as “Pillow,” was born on October 1, 1942, in Greene County, Eutaw, to the late Fayette Tyree and Elizabeth Horton. He confessed his life to Christ at an early age at Second Baptist Church. He was educated in the Eutaw public school system before relocating in the early 1960s to Cleveland, where he built his life, career, and legacy. After moving to Cleveland, he united with Olivet Institutional Baptist Church.
Webb was a devoted husband, loving father, and a man who was immensely loved by his family and friends. When he walked into a room, he commanded attention with his strong yet welcoming presence. He took pride in his appearance and especially enjoyed dressing sharply, always selecting and wearing his suits with confidence and style.
He held several jobs throughout his life, beginning as a chauffeur in Alabama—a role that sparked his passion for driving and led him to a long and accomplished trucking career. Webb became a truck driver for Preston Trucking Company (Line 151), where he joined Teamsters Local 407. Through dedication and perseverance, he became the first Black man at his company to earn the prestigious million-mile plaque, completing 32 years of service before retiring. After retirement, he worked for Ohio Bulk hauling concrete for five years and later drove school buses for Maple Heights Public Schools for seven years before retiring a second time.
Family was the center of Webb’s life. He met the love of his life, Betty J. Horton, in the early 1980s. Together they welcomed their daughter, Elizabeth Horton, in 1984 and were united in marriage on February 22, 1994. Webb was previously married and blessed with five children—Dwayne, Dimitrius, Derik, Darnell, and Denise Horton—and he also had an older son, Willie Mack, from a prior relationship. He loved all his children deeply and made sure they had what they needed.
One of Webb’s greatest joys was fishing, especially in Alabama. He often traveled back home just to fish, catching so much that he shared it with family and friends across the county and brought plenty back to Cleveland. He and his wife Betty eventually purchased a home in Eutaw, where they spent summers, Easter, and Thanksgiving surrounded by family. That home became known for his legendary fish fry gatherings, held right in the front yard, where it seemed like the whole town would show up. Feeding people brought him joy, and generosity came naturally to him.
Webb loved road trips between Cleveland and Alabama with his family, creating memories that will be cherished forever. He had a love for cars—his favorite being a Lincoln—but if someone needed a vehicle, he would go out of his way to find one for them, often locating private sellers to help others. He believed in honesty, always telling the truth whether you wanted to hear it or not. Webb also had the gift of conversation; he could tell stories for hours, leaving you laughing and feeling connected.
Above all, Webb was a provider, protector, and patriarch who loved his family fiercely and showed that love through his actions every day.
Webb Horton leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Betty J. Horton; seven children, Willie Mack (Shiela), Dwayne Horton, Dimitrius Horton, Derik Horton, Darnell Horton, Denise Horton, and Elizabeth Horton; twenty-one grandchildren; and twenty-two great-grandchildren. He also leaves siblings Ann Lofton [Mollie (deceased)], Taylor Young, Willie James Tyree (Goat), Odessa Usher, and Eddie Tyree, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by Dorothy Tyree, Johnnie Young, and Moses Tyree.
Webb’s life was one of faith, hard work, laughter, storytelling, generosity, and love. His legacy will live on in every mile driven, every fish fry shared, every story told, and every life he touched.
