William Michael “Mike” Henderson
February 19, 1950 – July 8, 2025
On July 8, 2025, the world lost a man with a mean guitar riff, a heart as big as his holiday meals, and enough personality to fill a garage full of race cars. William Michael Henderson, affectionately known as Mike, took his final ride to his eternal home, where we’re pretty sure he’s already reorganized heaven’s vinyl collection.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio on February 19, 1950, to Lewis and Louise Henderson (both now reunited with him), Mike was the second of three brothers. Lowell and Anthony also preceded him in death. The trio surely wasted no time catching up.
Mike graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in 1968 and shortly after, joined the U.S. Army, proudly serving his country from 1969 to 1972. A protector and a proud veteran, he brought that same strength and discipline home.
He married Sheryl Moore and from that union came two sons, Delmar and Lance, who inherited his good looks and wit. Mike worked for 30 years at the Regional Transit Authority (RTA), retiring as a diesel mechanic. His job perfectly suited a man who could fix just about anything.
Mike had many passions: music, cooking, photography, riding his motorcycle, and making sure his family never experienced a boring holiday meal. He could often be found strumming his guitar, firing up the grill, or spinning records louder than necessary. He was a thinker, a talker, a traveler, and a man who appreciated the art of drag racing his race cars.
Though Mike hadn’t touched a drink in over 25 years, he still made sure everyone’s cup stayed full in his house. Whether it was sweet tea, pop, or something a little stronger for the guests. His hospitality was unmatched, and he believed that love was best served with a plate full of food and a glass that never ran dry.
Though tough on the outside, Mike had a big heart. He loved hard, laughed loud, and made everyone feel like they belonged. He had an especially soft spot for his Georgia family and cherished summers spent with them in Jonesboro.
Mike shared years of love and laughter with his longtime companion and best friend, Cheryl Burgess, who preceded him in death. Together, they were the Bonnie and Clyde of their era. They rode through life as true partners in crime and kindness. Through this beautiful bond, Mike embraced Derek, Travis as his own children and loved their children like true grandchildren. Sleepovers at Granddaddy Mike’s house were legendary. The house was filled with food, candy, chaos, and unconditional love.
Mike is survived by his beloved sons, Delmar and Lance; his treasured grandchildren Delmar Jr., Lance Jr., Landis, Landen, Landell, Trevon, and Mykel; and his great-grandson Obi. Also carrying forward his legacy are his bonus children Derek, Travis (Korrey) Robinson, along with bonus grandchildren Kyle, Kennady, Kailyn, Jordyn, and Derek Jr.
To say he’ll be missed doesn’t quite cut it. Mike leaves behind a legacy of grit, grace, and laughter. He was the neighbor who always waved, the grandfather who always gave, and the friend who never let you leave hungry or unheard.
Special thanks goes to his loving friend and caregiver, Tonella Allen, Goddaughter and loving nurse, Carmella Pope, Lyndsey Appling, Alanah Bissell, and the hospice team from Cleveland Clinic Foundation for their loving care and support during his final chapter.
Mike Henderson: A man of many hats, more than a few tools, and an endless supply of stories. He lived fully, loved fiercely, and leaves a playlist, a grand photo collection, and a memory in every heart he touched.
Ride on, Mike. We’ll keep the music playing.
