William Sirmons, Jr., affectionately known as “Pete”, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2025, at the Cleveland Clinic, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on April 29, 1953, in Cleveland, Ohio, Pete’s life was a beautiful testament to love, generosity, and devotion to family. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Sirmons and Georgene Sirmons Kisner. His beloved nickname, “Pete,” was given by his Aunt Sadie, who noticed as a baby he would often point his toes as if ready to fly—just like Peter Pan.
Pete was raised in Cleveland’s Glenville neighborhood and was baptized at Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Henry J. Payden. As a teenager, he began working weekends at the Versailles Hotel to save for his dream car—a Triumph Spitfire—sparking a lifelong passion for cars and motorcycles.
After graduating from Glenville High School in 1971, Pete began his career with Ohio Bell (later Ameritech) as a Line Technician, where he worked diligently until his retirement due to health concerns. His curiosity and technical skills extended beyond his job—he loved tinkering with electronics, building model cars and train sets, and mastering any gadget that came his way.
Pete’s retirement gave him more time to enjoy his many passions. A devoted jazz enthusiast, he often curated music collections for family and friends. Known as the
family’s “Firestick Guru,” he was always ready to help others stay up-to-date with the latest technology. Pete had a thoughtful heart—he was known to surprise loved ones with gifts inspired by casual conversations. His popcorn runs to Akron were legendary and always shared with family who appreciated the treat. Pete’s love for motorcycles led him to compete in events across Ohio, particularly at Thompson Drag Raceway, where he earned trophies for his riding skills.
In 1980, Pete married his childhood sweetheart, Gayla McMillon. Together, they raised two daughters, Patrice and Krysten, who were the pride and joy of his life. Pete was a dedicated member of the BHHJ Reunion Committee, cherishing time spent with extended family and friends. He especially loved summer holidays, preparing and storing grilled foods to enjoy throughout the year.
Though soft-spoken and reserved, Pete was a gentle giant —steadfast, loving, and quietly strong. Those who knew him best will remember his warm heart, generous spirit, and unwavering loyalty. He leaves to cherish his memory: daughters Patrice Sirmons-Davis (Adam) and Krysten Sirmons; brother Bruce Sirmons, all of Cleveland, Ohio; sister Donna Sirmons of Las Vegas, Nevada; and his devoted companion of thirteen years, Diana Brumfield. He is also survived by a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, cousins, and lifelong friends.
