Willie Wynder, age 90, passed away peacefully in the early morning on Saturday, March 21, 2026, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy.
Willie was born on July 1, 1935, in Bessemer, Alabama. As a young child, he moved with his family to Fairmont, West Virginia, where he was raised alongside his siblings. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force, where he was stationed in Georgia and Texas prior to his honorable discharge.
Willie dedicated over 40 years of service to Republic Steel. Outside of work, he was an avid basketball player, competing in industrial leagues and representing Republic Steel against teams such as the U.S. Postal Service and Alcoa. He also enjoyed soul food, watching football (especially cheering on the Cleveland Browns and Indians), horse racing, traveling (particularly road trips), and classic Western television shows.
Willie was married to his beloved wife, Rena Wynder (née Wright), for 59 years. Together, they built a strong and loving family. He was preceded in death by his brothers Solomon Wynder, James Wynder, John Wynder, and Leon Wynder, and his sister Joanne Cooks. He is survived by his sisters, Katie Robinson and Pauline Wynder; and his children: Valerie Wynder, Michelle Nkadi (married to Dr. Emeke Nkadi), and Willie Wynder Jr.. He was a proud grandfather to Macall Dash, Ashley Nkadi, and Athena Wynder, who affectionately referred to him as “Goondaddy.”
Willie will be remembered for his warm personality, his love of storytelling, and his profoundly positive outlook on life. In the Heavens above, his family has no doubt he is sharing his favorite phrase: “everything is going great.”
