Yatunda H. Primm, a woman known for her wisdom, compassion, strength, and deep faith, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2026, in Akron, Ohio.
Born Irene Whitt on March 6, 1947, in Coy, Alabama, she later moved to Ohio, where she met and married the love of her life, Robert (Sultan) Primm. Together they embraced Islam and devoted their lives to faith, family, and service. Her faith remained a guiding foundation throughout her life.
Before continuing her education in nursing, Yatunda expressed her creativity and independence through entrepreneurship by owning and operating The Unity Shop, where she designed and created custom garments for family and community. She exercised this gift far into her late years creating even the garment she is wearing today. Even then, she showed the creativity, independence, and determination that would define her life.
She later returned to school and earned her nursing degree from Mott Community College in Flint, Michigan, beginning a distinguished career of more than 35 years in nursing. She started at Hurley Hospital and later continued her work at Akron General Medical Center, where she found her calling in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, caring for premature and high-risk newborns. She approached her work with compassion, skill, and a lifelong commitment to learning, serving countless families until her retirement.
Above all, she was devoted to her family. As the mother of eight children, she gave her life to nurturing, encouraging, and supporting them and later her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Whether at school events, graduations, weddings, athletic competitions, or the births of her grandchildren, she was present—steadfast, loving, and proud. She later shared her love of sewing and knitting with her daughters and granddaughters, passing down both skill and tradition.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Robert (Sultan) Primm; her parents Nathaniel and Frances Whitt; her sons Douglas Primm and Elcid Primm; her grandson Kaleem Primm; her granddaughter Erin Primm; her brothers William (Bill), Benny, and Finis Whitt; and her sister Eula (Clara) Penman.
She leaves to cherish her memory her sons Robert (Sabrina) Primm of Akron, Ohio, Shahied (Christine) Primm of Longwood, Florida, and Kariem (Anita) Primm of Akron, Ohio; her daughters Aziza (Charles) Carswell of Ravenna, Ohio, Yatunda (Jimmy) Muhammad of Akron, Ohio, and Akilah Farrakhan of Akron, Ohio; 24 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, one sister, Ethel Pinkard of Columbus, OH and a host of extended family and friends whose lives she touched deeply.
Her legacy lives on through her faith, her family, and the many lives she cared for and inspired.
