Zadie Mae Shaw, born on June 16, 1944, to the union of Samuel and Helen Erskine in Huntsville, Alabama, peacefully departed this life on May 14, 2024. She was the second of ten siblings: Alma Jean Erskine, Joe Erskine, Thomas Erskine, Lillian Jackson, Dorothy Erskine, Jerry Erskine, Sammie Lee Erskine, Geneva Baker.
At the age of 18, Zadie embarked on a journey with her sister Alma Jean and cousin Margery, leaving Huntsville behind. Settling in Cleveland around 1962, she later welcomed her children Toneta Erskine, Dwayne Erskine, and Christopher Erskine. On February 8, 1972, Zadie entered into holy matrimony with Frank Shaw, a union that lasted 33 years and blessed them with their son, Frank Shaw Jr.
Zadie and Frank were pioneers as the first black family to reside and work at Villa Serena for over 40 years. Zadie had a zest for life, enjoying casino visits, bingo games, and passionately following the Cleveland Indians. She was an avid viewer of “her stories,” particularly The Young and the Restless.
Described as strong, clumsy, and popular for her caring and nonchalant charm, Zadie was also known for her stern, outspoken, stubborn, yet lovable nature. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, creating countless cherished memories through cruises and grandkid slumber parties.
Zadie was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Helen Erskine, her husband, Frank Shaw Sr., and siblings Dorothy Erskine, Alma Jean Minor, Ernestine Erskine, and Sammie Lee Erskine. She leaves behind her four children Toneta Erskine, Dwayne Erskine, Christopher Erskine, and Frank (Wendy) Shaw Jr.; Eight grandchildren: DeBrail Erskine, Terai Norris, Chantel Shaw, Christina Erskine, Tiffany Richardson, Dwayne Erskine Jr., Dante Erskine, and Dustin Erskine. Three great-grandchildren: Nailah Norris, Morgane Grady, and Xier Erskine. Additionally, she is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
